Addressing the Health Effects of Climate Change
A continuing education conference on 11/15/08 at DuVal Auditorium, at the U of A Health Sciences Center in Tucson, will focus on health professionals' and public officials' responsibilities to become better educated about and plan for a preventively oriented response to the impending community health challenges of climate change. The full day conference will address specific health and environmental issues in Tucson and the region related to climate change. The emphasis will be on solutions and prevention, with the objective of inspiring the health community to begin planning that will mitigate or eliminate the potential impacts of increased temperatures, evolving new infectious disease epidemics, food insecurity, and water quality and scarcity. This area related to climate change is under reported and inadequately addressed in our communities.
Jeremy Hess, MD, MPH representing the Office of Environmental Health of the CDC (U.S. Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia) will address the background of global warming and the ensuing health effects of climate change. Kristin Welker-Hood, ScD, MSN, RN, is a nurse and environmental health scientist and the Director of the Environmental and Health Programs at Physician's for Social Responsibility in Washington DC. She will address the needed public health response to these challenges and call for adaptation and organization in our communities to help prevent health problems of climate events.
